BY: Webteam / 0 COMMENTS / CATEGORIES: Fishing Tips, Flathead, Jewfish, Pittwater

Fihsing in Pittwater is hot at the moment . Bream and small snapper are being caught everywhere , Flathead are on the chew , bonito and tailor are in schools , they seem to find you , even some mackerel . Small soapy jewies are about amongst the moorings but you have to fish the tides .

For all the locations of where to fish for your preferred species in Pittwater , see my past blogs . They will tell you the gear and where to find them .

For my fishing this weekend , I caught 3 jewies , 4 Flathead , one big tailor , one eel , one flounder . I wasn’t on the water much but more time would have caught a lot more . I was targeting jewies and all the rest were by catches. As usual , all were released except one Flathead .

This weekend , the moon is perfect , so I expect it to be as good again .

I am in Thailand fishing this weekend so I will post next week all the big fish we catch . flatheadpittwater flounder

Fish everywhere in Pittwater April29/30.

BY: Webteam / 0 COMMENTS / CATEGORIES: Fishing Tips, Hawkesbury River, Jewfish, Pittwater, Soft plastics, Videos

Fishing in Pittwater this weekend has been terrific . It should keep going so get out there next weekend . Flathead , bream , bonito , tailor , jewfish , kingie said are all there for the taking .

On Saturday I set off early to target jewfish in Pittwater .Rising tide to high at 10.40 am . The moon is right . Nothing from 6.30 -8.30 then two jewies by 9 am . Very happy when the plan comes off . I then moved to another spot amongst the moorings , and at 9.3o till 10.00 another two jewies . I left them still biting as I had to go in . I used Flathead gear, 5″ soft plastic jerk shad in white , 1/4 oz jig head and 3/0 hook .the secret is to fish light so 10 lb leader , 2500 reel .All you have to do is find a deep spot amongst the moorings and be patient . Let the jig head hit the bottom and then just jig it up and down aggressively , letting it hit the bottom each time . They will hit it on the drop mostly and also when it is on the bottom , never on the up , so be ready .

Sunday I went after the jewies again . Same deal as yesterday . This time I had 3 jewies in the boat between 6.30 and 7.00 am . One hour after the low tide time . Then nothing for half an hour so I moved to another spot . Then 8.00am another jewie , and then nothing .

I decided then to go up the Hawkesbury to try my luck .  Nothing from 10.30 till 1.00 pm . Then a hit , an nice 61 cm jewie . That made 5 for the day and 9 for the weekend . Add to this two Flathead , one tailor and one eel as by catch and a good day . The gear up the Hawkesbury is bigger , 17-20 lb leader , but still 2500 reel and 10 lb braid . Use the same system as I have described above .

Enjoy the photos and video .

Jewie fishing on Anzac Day 2017.

BY: Webteam / 0 COMMENTS / CATEGORIES: Fishing Tips, Jewfish, Pittwater, Soft plastics

I headed out for a fish to target Jewies this morning . Everything was right , one day from the new moon , high tide at 7.10 am , and slightly overcast . Armed with my Flathead gear , 10 lb leader , 8 lb braid , 2500 reel , 2-6 kg rod . My go to lures , a soft plastic 5″ white jerk shad on a 1/4 oz jig head 3/0 hook size .

As I only had 2 hours before I had to go back , I decided to only fish amongst the moored boats in Pittwater . The technique was to cast out let it slowly drop to the bottom and rip rip to make the jerk shad look injured .

i started fishing at 6.15 am and for an hour and 10 minutes nothing ! Then just 15 minutes after high tide ,one hit a small soapie Jew 50 cm .

next cast another slightly bigger , then another on the next cast . Three in a row !. Over the 30 minutes till 8 am , I caught 6 small jewies , the biggest being 58 cm . Then as fast as they came on they stopped . Obviously a school of soapies appeared and went with the tide .

Then the pesky leather jackets appeared and ruined four soft plastics . I landed two in the boat hooked on the side . Even the live tailor I had out didn’t get a hit from anything .

The lesson is that if the tide and conditions are right you will get the fish , whether it be jewies , bream , Flathead or kingies .

Pittwater is fishing well . Have a look at the video of assorted shots of the various jewies .

Squidding in Pittwater 23.4.17

BY: Webteam / 0 COMMENTS / CATEGORIES: Fishing Style, Fishing Tips, Flathead, Jewfish, Pittwater, Soft plastics, Squid

Fishing in Pittwater is good at the moment . Water is clear and still warm . You can find plenty of squid . Just look for any weed beds with clear water and start throwing your squid jig around . They will find it . I caught 6 big squid including one giant yesterday . See the photo . They fed 9 of us for dinner with a thai chilli noodle dish . I am using a 2.5 g squid jig in the natural brown colour . It looks authentic in the water but I know the white ones and the pink ones also work in Pittwater . The squid are also in the deep so here I use a running sinker rig and a 1 metre trace from the swivel . You can also use a paternoster rig but I prefer the running sinker rig as you can make the jig dart around .

Flathead are also biting , look for the drop offs and at high tide the flats or shallow areas . Good around the jetties .

Jewfish are also around biting on plastics and live bait . I caught a school Jew yesterday and a small Flathead while moving around to see what was biting . 5″ soft plastics here with 1/4 oz and if in the deep 1/5 oz jig head on 3/0 or 5/0 hook .

I didn’t fish for bream but I know they are around as are rat kings .

The moon is good for fishing this week and weekend .

Pittwater fishing 25.3.17 .great catches

BY: Webteam / 0 COMMENTS / CATEGORIES: Bream, Fishing Style, Hawkesbury River, How to, Jewfish, Kingfish, Pittwater, Soft plastics

Fishing Pittwater Saturday. The morning was still so I went after bream as it was high tide . Two nice bream in two hours plus plenty of small reds to keep me entertained . I was using 1000 reel , 6 lb leader , 4 lb braid and 2 kg rod . The jig head was 1/12 oz with 2.5″ gulp shrimp in new penny colour . I decided to fish deep , 6 -7 metres as the water was dirty from the rain .

I went out in the afternoon at 4.30 just to try for a jewfish . After about an hour with nothing I hooked this small Jewie which was exciting . Then along came a school of bait fish followed by some rat kings so I threw the 5 ” soft plastic at them and hooked up a rat kingside which gave me a lot of fight . That was the day . The last two were caught on a 5″ Berkeley gulp jerk shad in pearl white , 3/0 hook and 1/4 oz jig head . I fished in 10-12 metres water amongst the moored boats .enjoy the photos . Videos to come later .

Here is a nice video of the small 50 cm jewfish I caught in Pittwater last week . On a 5″ soft plastic , jerk shad pearl white , on 3/0 hook and 1/4 oz jig head . It was in 11 metres water where there was some structure . Look how clear the water is . Not a bad by catch when you are going for flathead .

Gun fisherman Tim Angus fished at long reef wide last week . The results – 7 kingies all around the metre mark and two jewfish , one 70 cm ,and one 85 cm . He fished in 130 ft water . Kingies caught on Stella 20,000 reel, medium heavy jigging rod PE 6, 80 lb braid , 100 lb Fluoro leader . Live squid for bait . You have to heavy up for these big fellas otherwise they will win .
Jewfish were caught on stella 6000 reel, 40 lb braid , 50 lb leader, bait was butterflied yakkas and squid . See the photos .

Targeting Jewfish – Hawkesbury River

BY: Webteam / 0 COMMENTS / CATEGORIES: Jewfish, Soft plastics
I went out jewfish hunting today with two experts or so they said . Gone at 6 am to catch the 8.30 am high tide change in the Hawkesbury river . Only using soft plastics and light gear . The reel was 2500 Stella , 10 lb braid and either 15 lb or 17 lb leader , 2 metres long . Light weight rod , basically your flathead rod , 2-4 kilo . Well it started off well , by 9.30 am one lovely jewie was landed . Unfortunately no photo as the fish jumped over board just before the camera was set . Not to worry we will catch another one .famous last words . For the next 3 hours and numerous new spots , nothing . So we went to the Cowan creek area to fish whilst we waited for the tide to change . Here we caught 3 tailor , one big one , two small snapper , two flathead and one whiting . At 2 pm we headed back up the Hawkesbury for the start of the run in tide . Nothing until half an hour before we had to finish , two beautiful Jewish came into the boat . See the photo below . So the day ended well but for the 4 of us fishing , one guy caught all three . The most unusual fish caught was the puffer fish below . It was a really small fish and it puffed itself up to this big ball . It must be one of the ugliest fish around . All in all a great day but a long one . Many new ideas to try over the winter , and I will keep you posted on all the ideas, gear , and how to catch them .. The soft plastics were all paddle tails , as the jewfish like the movement of the tail on the drop . Hooks were either 5/0 or 3/0 depending on what size paddle tail you had on . Both worked . The size of the jig head that caught the jewies was 1/2 oz . The rest of us used 3/8 th oz jig heads . Weight depends on the depth and the current so you have to work that out yourself .

The secret to Fishing in Winter – Go light on the tackle

BY: Webteam / 0 COMMENTS / CATEGORIES: Bream, Flathead, Live bait, Pittwater, Soft plastics
When the water starts to get colder the fish we hunt in summer get lazy and harder to catch . But with all fishing you will catch more fish and bigger fish the lighter your tackle is .
FLATEAD – you can land any flathead on 6 lb braid , 8 lb or 10 lb leader . 2500 reel , 2-4 kg rod . More bites , more catches and even big ones . 5″ soft plastics , even 2″ shrimps depending on where you are fishing . See previous blogs for this info .
BREAM – the big ones are tricky so the lighter you go the more chance you have . 4 lb or 6 lb braid is ok , it’s the leader that is important . 6 lb maximum and go down to 4 lb or even 3 lb if they are not biting . I find 4 lb or 6 lb ok . 1000 reel and 2-4 kg rod is ok , but 1-3 kg rod is also very good and a lot of fun . You need to play these fish but that is the fun .
JEWFISH – this is fun on light gear . 2500 reel , 8 lb to 10 lb braid , 17 lb leader . It’s the leader that is important . You can go to 20 but lighter is better . You may lose one or two but you will hook and catch a lot more .
KINGFISH – the really big ones will smash you but to catch quantity lighter is better . I use PE 2-4 rod mostly with live bait , braid is 20 lb and the leader is 30 lb .and a 3-5 kg rod with soft plastics . Braid is 1O or 15 lb and leader 20 lb . Many times I catch a rat kingie on my flathead gear and the fight is terrific .
TAILOR – when I fish for tailor I use my flathead gear but up the leader to 15 lb . But they are still ok on your 10 lb leader and they won’t bite you off as much if you have a hard body lure , stick bait or metal spinner with the hooks at the back .
SALMON – these guys come in schools in winter and are the best fun on light gear . Use either your flathead gear and if you really want some fun use your bream gear with 3″ soft plastics in clear or white colour to imitate a white bait . You won’t believe how good it is .
WHITING – just use your bream gear and adjust the lures .
SQUID – plenty around in winter . Use your bream gear for fun or flathead gear if they are bigger .LEADER – in all the above scenarios , the length of leader is important . I use at least the length of the rod but usually a little more than 2 metres so I can change lures and still have a long leader for the day .
remember – lighter is better so if it is slow , go down to lighter line especially the leader . You will catch more especially using soft plastics , vibes or jigs . Even with live bait , lighter is better .
I hope this helps , have fun !
